My name is Matthew Cooper and I’ve been a script writer for hire, UK script consultant and Script Doctor for over 25 years.

BAFTA shortlisted scriptwriter for hire
I was BAFTA shortlisted for my work on the British prime time TV soap ‘Emmerdale’ and I was the youngest scriptwriter (at 27) to ever make the core writing team of the ITV soap.
Across on the BBC I wrote the episode of ‘EastEnders’ where ‘Alfie’ told ‘Kat’ he loved her – one of the most watched episodes in the shows history.
I helped to triple the viewing figures of the CH4 soap ‘Hollyoaks’ when I joined in 2006, and helped lead the teen soap to a clean sweep at the British Soap Awards in 2007. During my time on Hollyoaks we introduced the McQueen Family, did the first serious ‘coming out’ story about the characters ‘John Paul and Craig’ (which has become a cultural milestone) and I helped to introduce gangster Warren Fox, described by The Guardian as the only genuine gangster to ever appear in a UK soap, who within a week of his arrival had murdered a rival, chopped up his body and buried him (all at 6pm on CH4, and all under the watchful eye of the censors – no mean feet).
I’ve also directed five microbudget horror films and one comedy ‘Sober’ (which was released in 2025 to rave reviews and got 10,000 views on YouTube in its first two days of release on that platform). Overall I’ve got about 200 hours of UK TV with my name on. BUT… I’ve sold a screenplay to Miramax, and another to major US studio. I’ve worked as a script consultant on projects backed by Netflix/ITV and CH4.
I was the winner of the first ever Lloyds Bank Channel Four Film Challenge, the Oscar Moore Screenplay Prize and I’ve been Royal Television Society (RTS) nominated as a script writer.
