Hi – I’m Matthew Cooper and I’ve been a script writer for hire and UK script consultant for over 25 years.

In my long film and TV career I’ve been on the core writing team of four of the UK highest rated soap operas – EastEnders for the BBC (including writing one of the most iconic and watched episodes in the show’s history – see below).

I was on the core writing team of Emmerdale for ITV (the youngest writer the show had ever had). I worked on Family Affairs for CH5 and I was part of the team that revamped Hollyoaks for CH4 (taking the show from 500,000 viewers to over 3million viewers in less than six months).

I’ve been BAFTA shortlisted and Royal Television Society nominated as a script writer for television soaps.

SOAPS where I worked for years rely on hooks, cliff-hangers and ensuring repeat viewers by utilizing great writing, great characters and addictive, compulsive storylines.

I’m credited on Hollyoaks with co-storyline-writing over 200 half hour episodes of show, during my time on Hollyoaks as a storyliner the show went from nearly being cancelled by CH4 (in 2005) – to winning every category of the UK soap awards in 2007 and more than quadrupling its viewing figures (we really did that).  

I know how to create storylines that hook and hold, and plots that keep audiences tuned in – and on the edge of their seats (or smartphone screens).

Broadcast TV these days in literally old hat, viewers are turning off in droves – and the new audiences are looking away from broadcast TV to get their fixes of drama or comedy – and as a script writer for hire and UK script consultant (as well as a film director for hire) I’ve moved with the times and with the audiences into online spaces like YouTube (I’m a YouTube Partner – check out my YouTube channel here) and Tik Tok, and X.

I know that the latest trend in viewing habits is very much towards Micro Dramas and Verts (or Verticals) and I’m working with various micro drama producers (worldwide) currently who want to utilise my scriptwriting and storylining expertise to help launch their own micro drama series.

I’m used to working on shows like soaps – which like microdramas have fast turn overs and produce huge amounts of broadcast level content – scripts that need hooks and great writing that grab and hold of viewers and won’t let go – on top of this experience – I am production ready, and I can write / storyline and deliver scripts to a BAFTA level standard with great speed – the turn around from storyline to script can be a matter of days – and the scripts I deliver are production read, meaning they are polished and highly professional, but also easily realisable (easy and straightforward to shoot) – this is all part of my experience as a soap opera scriptwriter – used to turning around whole half hour episodes from start to finish in a matter of days.

Hi – I’m Matthew Cooper and I’ve been a script writer for hire and UK script consultant for over 25 years.
