My name is Matthew Cooper; I’ve been a freelance script writer for hire and UK script consultant for over 25 years. I’ve got over 200 hours of UK broadcast TV to my name – as well feature film credits (and scripts sold to Universal Picture and Miramax).

As a scriptwriter I’ve written original feature films and award winning TV – on BBC prime time soap EastEnders I wrote the episode where ‘Alfie Moon told Kat Slater’ he loved her – one of the highest viewed episodes in the shows history. I was part of the core writing teams on both EastEnders for the BBC and Emmerdale for ITV.
I also worked on CH4’s Hollyoaks and helped to triple the viewing figures during an award winning run in 2006 to 2007 (the year Hollyoaks swept the UK soap awards for the first and only time in the shows history).
I’ve also written for CH5’s Family Affairs, as well as writing award winning short films – my first short film starred Ewan McGregor (his first ever role) and was broadcast on Channel Four in the UK.

I’ve done under the table rewrites for ITV drama shows, and Netflix produced motion pictures – often with no credit working well under the radar.
I’ve written scripts for corporate drama and comedy, including a feature length comedy drama only shown during on-boarding at a major blue chip company.
Over the past 25 years I’ve worked with new and established directors / producers and screenwriters to fix, edit and rewrite scripts prior to production – including working for some legendary indie producers in the USA.

My feature film debut as a director, the rubber reality horror thriller ‘Markham‘ was released in 2020 and since then I’ve produced, written and directed five other feature films (with a sixth and seventh due for release in 2026).
In 2025 I released the feature film ‘Sober’ which I wrote and directed in conjunction with the actors Dean Smith (Waterloo Road / Still Open All Hours) and Tom Gibbons (Funny Cow/The Archers).
Making SOBER was a dream come true and a project very close to my heart. The film was released free to view on YouTube and wracked up 10,000 views on the first day of release. ‘Sober’ received coverage on BBC Upload as well as tons of local press in Yorkshire (the film is a love letter to Leeds and Leeds United).
As a freelance script writer for hire I’m available to help with every aspect of script writing, this includes; helping with storylines, pitch documents, synopsis work, script reports, script rewrites and original scripts from scratch.
As well as writing drama and comedy for film and TV, I’m also available as a writer for marketing videos, training videos and just about any other type of scripted content. I can turn my hand to any type of scripted content – if your final production is to be performed by actors – then I’m your man.
I’ve written online serials / webisodes and Vertical drama and comedy – to a brief and created original drama for corporate companies too. I’ve also written highly successful comedy scripts for ‘Comedy Dining’ type experiences. .
As a script consultant I’ve also worked extensively with Hollywood based producers and production teams as a ‘fixer’ and rewrite specialist.
